AIBTM Doubles
Educational Content
for 2012
AIBTM America Meetings Week will offer
twice the number of educational sessions
at its 2012 event, June 19-21, 2012 at the
Baltimore Convention Center. The three-day
business networking event launches with
AIBTM Education Day, followed by two days
of exhibition and continued learning. A series
of conferences, forums and workshops have
been put together by AIBTM and some of the
industry’s biggest educational organizations.
The Professional Convention Management
Association (PCMA) will host Education
Powered by PCMA, PCMA Executive Edge
and the State of the Industry Panel, as well
as deliver six, 15-minute “bite-size” learning
sessions at the AIBTM booth. The Society
of Incentive Travel Executives (SITE) will
host the SITE Young Leaders Program,
along with an educational session on the
benefits of incentives. The Association of
Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE) will
present three education tracks on how
industry professionals can make the most
of face time and use technology to best
enhance the corporate travel experience. And
the International Congress and Convention
Association (ICCA) will present the ICCA
Global Meetings track, featuring two
90-minute roundtable sessions followed by
a one-hour clinic. More information at
Art 43 Basel: The
Premier International
Art Show
Taking place in Basel, Switzerland from
June 14-17, Art 43 Basel presents a premier
selection from the most influential and
cutting-edge galleries from across the world.
This year, more than 300 galleries from 36
countries on 6 continents will exhibit works
by over 2,500 artists of the 20th and 21st
centuries. Founded by a group of local
gallerists, the first Art Basel edition took place
in 1970 and has long ranked as the most
prestigious annual art show worldwide. The
quality and diversity of the artworks exhibited
regularly attracts more than 60,000 artists,
collectors, gallerists, museum directors,
curators and art enthusiasts. The exceptional
lineup of shows during Art 43 Basel will
include: Jeff Koons and Philippe Parreno
at Fondation Beyeler; ‘Renoir. Between
Bohemia and Bourgeoisie’ at Kunstmuseum
Basel; Hilary Lloyd at the Museum für
Gegenwartskunst and ‘Vladimir Tatlin - New

Philippine DOT
Unveils New Visitor
Initiative
The Department of Tourism (DOT) is
launching a new brand campaign to attract
visitors to the country with the line - ‘It’s
more fun in the Philippines.’ Focusing on the
country’s core strength, the campaign singles
out what no other destination can offer - the
Filipino people. For example, the Lonely
Planet guidebook calls
Filipinos ‘among the most
easygoing and ebullient
people anywhere.’ Filipinos are already
known around the world to be one of the
happiest and warmest people on earth. The
campaign hopes to enjoin the whole country
in creating positive buzz for the tagline. As
the international campaign gets underway,
the DOT is also developing a national initiative
under the line ‘#1FORFUN’ to rally the
nation. The long-awaited idea was developed
by advertising agency BBDO Guerrero,
appointed in December after an exhaustive
pitch overseen personally by Tourism
Secretary Ramon Jimenez and approved by
the President and members of the Cabinet.
New Green Meeting
Standards Available
from ASTM
International
A collection of eight new ASTM International
standards provide meeting planners and
suppliers with specific guidelines and
performance measurements for creating
environmentally sustainable events. “This
is a major accomplishment representing
collaboration between ASTM International,
the Green Meetings Industry
Council (GMIC), the U.S.
Environmental Protection
Agency and hundreds of
volunteers across North
America and Europe,”
says Sue Tinnish, Ph.D., Chairman of
Subcommittee E60.02, which coordinated
and implemented the joint effort. The
approved standards cover the evaluation
and selection of the following topics as
they relate to sustainable meetings, events,
trade show and conferences: Destinations,
Exhibits, Transportation, A/V & Production,
Communication & Marketing, Onsite Offices,
Food & Beverage, and Meeting Venues. A
ninth standard on accommodations is still
under development and will be available at a
