An overview of environmentally-friendly providers

The growth in environmentally aware practices is a global trend - in the travel industry, too. This positive development also increases demand for environmentally friendly venues and accommodation. Various Berlin providers are aware of these and are increasingly offering eco-friendly services. The Berlin Convention Office (BCO) has responded to this trend by creating a unique website.

A variety of Berlin providers are posted on the "Berlin – Green Meetings" platform, who have already implemented ecologically sustainable practices and have undertaken to make responsible use of natural resources in order to benefit the environment. With this database the city of Berlin takes the lead on the global stage. Users are not only given a detailed overview of the various service providers but are also furnished with interesting facts about green Berlin. Further information is available on the new website:

Numerous hotels and event locations are switching to environmentally friendly alternatives: recycled paper, eco-electricity and energy saving lamps are just a few of the innovations that are currently shaping the Berlin convention and meeting landscape.

Tempodrom

For example the event location Tempodrom, with its central location near Potsdamer Platz, is operated on the basis of a unique overall ecological concept. The guiding principle is energy efficiency – greenhouse and CO2 emissions are to be avoided from the very outset. Already during the construction of the building, attention focused on the responsible handling of natural resources. The Tempodrom now has a solar and photovoltaic energy system as well as a geothermal heat exchanger. What’s more, it runs on eco-electricity. Unavoidable emissions are converted and donated to other environmental protection projects.

In this way it is possible to stage climate-neutral events at the Tempodrom. Having the most modern hotels in Europe, it is no wonder that Berlin also has hotels that are completely in line with the new trends towards nature and sustainability. For example, the Maritim proArte hotel has had its organic certification since summer of 2007. There is now a daily organic offering on their lunch menu and the hotel buys its meat from a regional producers’ collective. “Green” principles also apply to the Maritim Hotel Berlin on Stauffenbergstrasse, where emphasis is placed on saving energy, preventing waste, and protecting nature. Stringent separation of recyclables is another principle that is practiced.

Environmental events in the German capital
With 1,500 events every day Berlin has the largest cultural offering in Europe. A whole series of events are dedicated to the theme of the environment, for instance the Berlin Energy Days. Around 6,000 participants attend the conference which is staged once a year in the German capital. This large-scale event will focus on energy efficiency and climate protection.

Clean Tech World showcases the latest environmental technologies in a historical setting. The international exhibition and conference will be staged for the first time this year on the site of the old Tempelhof Airport. From 15 to 19 September 2010 around 300 exhibitors will present their innovative products and technologies. The highlight is the presentation of the Clean Tech Media Award 2010 on 16 September 2010.
