IMEX – at its 10th Anniversary
The German capital presents itself with 21 Berlin partners

Ten Years of IMEX – it also means - ten years of Berlin at IMEX from 24 to 26 May 2012 in Frankfurt, Germany. This is a very good opportunity for the Berlin Convention Office of visitBerlin to take stock at the most important trade exhibition for meetings and incentives. On the Germany stand, therefore, the focus will be on these 3 questions:
How has the convention business of the German capital developed over the past years?
What topics have gained in importance?
What does the future of Berlin as a convention location look like?

Berlin, Gendarmenmarkt
Answers are provided by visitBerlin and ghh consult GmbH at a joint press conference on 23 May with information about the "Meeting market Germany and hotspot Berlin: Key facts and success factors". Some facts in advance: 115,700 events took place in Berlin in 2011 (+2%), attended by 9.7 million participants, a 7 percent increase versus 2010. The number of room nights rose to 6.05 million (+ 9%). In 2011 the share of international congress participants amounted to 19 percent.
The upwards tendency is reflected in a particularly significant manner by the sales revenues: EUR 1.8 billions were generated last year by meeting and convention participants in Berlin, a 10 percent increase versus 2010. The meeting and convention industry secured 34,000 fulltime jobs, a plus of 2,000 jobs compared to 2010.

Berlin's future outlook:
A a new congress center and a new, additional airport in 2012

The growing success and revenues result most likely from the broad network of partners, which promote the German capital as a team. At IMEX, 21 Berlin supplier partners exhibit with the visitBerlin Berlin Convention Office on the Germany Booth in Hall 8/ booth F 100. The team of ICC Berlin 2.0 presents, for example, the "CityCube Berlin" -the new congress and exhibition hall will open in 2014. It will replace on a temporary basis the international congress and convention center ICC Berlin, which will be closed and completely refurbished from 2014 onwards. At the "CityCube Berlin" events with up to 10,000 participants are possible in the future.

The city of Berlin will open a new airport in 2012 named BER with a starting capacity of up to 27 million passengers per year. The airport will be expanded over time to cater for as many as 45 million passengers per year. BER will provide Berlin with many new nonstop connections to destinations within Europe and also worldwide. Lufthansa, for example, plans to increase its nonstop flights from Berlin to 38 per day from June 2012 on – including new direct European routes to Birmingham, Manchester, Valencia, Bologna and Geneva. The new airport will be the new home of airline "airberlin". With its partners, "airberlin" airline will offer about 70 nonstop flights and up to 9,500 departures per day from BER Airport, including five long haul connections to the USA and Asia. With all of this, Germany's capital will become even more attractive for international event planners.
