Editor's Note
Dear Reader,
In my part of the world, hospitality is ingrained in the culture, giving organizers valuable plusses whenever they bring events here. While the importance of infrastructure and other hardware cannot be stressed enough, the human factor always makes the difference.

Asia offers the sought-after combination of hardware and software. And it just keeps on getting better with the introduction of new products and steady stream new hotels and resorts opening.

Read on.

Focus: Shanghai MICE revs up for 2011

ShanghaiGlobal focus is on Shanghai as it hosts the World Expo 2010. Its direct contribution to the city’s MICE industry are measurable in terms of infrastructure and tourism developments, according to Patrick Chen, assistant director for International Tourism Promotion, Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration (SMTA).

“We will have a new convention center and event venues after the Expo, which will be better for the Shanghai MICE industry because we can host more big events or conferences,” Chen said.

It would still be next year, though, before the city’s MICE industry will start really moving again. Some groups have opted to hold their events in neighbouring cities this year, Chen said. There were concerns with availability and increase in cost of venues because of the demand spurred by hosting the World Expo.

Chen is “looking forward to increasing the MICE market in 2011” and getting more of the corporate meetings market, association conferences and congresses.

PCOs interested to bring their events to Shanghai may get in touch with SMTA regarding incentives. Chen said there are no regular criteria for incentives for international groups; it is still provided on a “case by case” basis.

The Chinese government is targeting 17 million visitors for the six-month World Expo, which opened on May 1. Of these, 3.5 million are expected to come from overseas.

Case study: Increased incentives mean increased conventions for Seoul

Visit SeoulThe Seoul government’s decision earlier this year to increase financial subsidies for event organizers seeking to choose Seoul as a venue has been paying off. The city’s latest won bid is hosting the Annual Congress of the International Fiscal Association, the world’s premier gathering of finance specialists, in 2018. It attracts more than 2,500 professionals from over 100 countries. Incentives aside, Seoul was chosen for its highly developed MICE infrastructure and expertise in handling large-scale corporate meetings.

The financial incentives for conventions with over 2,000 attendees was increased from South Korean won 60 million (US$50,000) to South Korean won 100 million. IFA included, Seoul has already already won the right to host 13 prominent international conferences so far this year.

The Korea International Fiscal Association conducted an effective campaign over the last four years with the full support of the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Kyushu woos CX

Japan’s Kyushu Tourism Promotion Organisation (KTPO) executives recently met with Cathay Pacific (CX)‘s officers-in-charge in Hong Kong to “convince” them to launch flights between Hong Kong and Kyushu.

KTPO director for overseas division Shigeto Moto said, “They mentioned that CX has an idea to resume its direct flight to Kyushu from Hong Kong. However, they also said that it is not finalized and fixed. Therefore, I'm not optimistic in this regard. I have to continue to request CX to launch direct flight to Kyushu again.”

Hong Kong is a key market for them and the lack of direct flights is putting a cap on arrivals. KTPO's other target markets are Korea, Taiwan, China, Thailand, and Singapore.

Kyushu is known for nature, hotsprings and gourmet food.
