News in the air – there is the new Open Skies initiative… I’m
curious about it. How will this affect the airline industry?
Who will stay in business; who will not? Will US carriers give
better service or will European carriers start picking up bad
habits? We won’t know right away. Open Skies, originally slated to
begin in October 2007, will begin on 31 March 2008. Britain asked
that the program be delayed for five months.
One year from now any EU airline is allowed to fly from any city in the
27-nation EU bock to any city in the states and vice versa. However,
it seems the US carriers have a bit of an advantage in that they can
fly from city to city within the EU while European airlines can only
fly to and from the states and not within the states –like flying a
lucrative cross-country route like New York/LA. Hmmmmmm
! Virgin Atlantic is already working on
an aggressive plan to launch direct flights from European cities
like Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, Zurich, Amsterdam and possibly Madrid
to the states.
Until next time
