‘Just-in-Time’ Procurement – The New Normal?
Dear *|FNAME|*,
It was tough to work both of these terms into the same headline without choking, but I fought off the urge and decided to just throw it all out there in one shot.
I ran across these wonderful words in an article about a recent MeetingNews survey of corporate and association meeting planners. If you’re like me, these terms trigger your gag reflex – and for good reason. The first has been around awhile, only recently becoming somewhat acceptable in meeting & event circles. Heck, there’s even a company or two out there that promote themselves as experts at this particular stratagem – which is really just a euphemism for “Let’s wait until the last minute to book and hope we can wring some more concessions out of ‘em.”
This can’t be good for either side, who are already suspicious enough of each other’s (profit) motives in these difficult economic times. If you ask me, things worked a lot better when we didn’t approach every negotiation with our right hand extended in a gesture of friendship and our left hand behind our back holding a machete.
So the next time you hear someone talking about just-in-time procurement, ask them if it’s something they really believe in, or whether it’s a corporate mandate they’re forced to live with. I’ll bet I know the answer…
|
And then there’s “The New Normal.” Are you as sick of this as I am? Again, it’s being applied to the MICE industry as well as a lot of others, but no matter where you see it, it basically means the same thing: Learn to accept less.
This is in the same vein as just-in-time procurement – a shift in the basic paradigm that essentially means things aren’t the way they used to be. Well, I’ve got news for you. Things are never the way they used to be. It’s called progress. Evolution. Growth. The difference here is that neither of these terms is about progress or growth. They’re about something else altogether – they’re about defeat. Playing the system. Resignation. They’re about accepting things the way they are.
I don’t know about you, but that’s not how I do business.
We need to continue to push the envelope, search for common ground and mutually beneficial results. Make our case using good data, measurement and ROI.
We need to stress win/win, not win/lose.
We’re in this thing together, people.
Once we forget that and accept “The New Normal,” the knives come out and chaos reigns.

Industry Execs Discuss Unbundled Ancillary
|
European business travel managers may have to accept the reality of unbundled ancillary fees from the airlines, but they want big changes in the billing and negotiations process, according to dialogue generated by a recent event conducted by ACTE, in partnership with CORTAS. Transparency, uniformity and negotiability were the key issues raised by 100 delegates from the Netherlands and surrounding countries, who recently convened for an Executive Forum in Amsterdam. One of the biggest concerns leveled at the airlines was the broad range in costs for similar services and the lack of uniformity. The consensus among travel managers was that unbundled ancillary fees would now become deal makers or breakers in negotiations with carriers for the next year. Conventional wisdom led many travel managers to believe they could negotiate the softer fees, yet this has been repeatedly hindered by the lack of data regarding unbundled ancillary fees.
