The blue Concert Hall in central Stockholm is one of Sweden’s great architectural masterpieces. It was designed by architect Ivar Tengbom during a period of expansion in the capital. The Concert Hall was built to house what is now the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and to serve as an arena for the Nobel Prize Ceremony and other such formal occasions. Tengbom's grand vision was to erect a classical Greek temple to the honor of music close to the polar circle. The Concert Hall was built during an epoch instilled with the democratic ideals and stylistically inspired by the cradle of this political dream: Athens. Stockholm obtained thus in 1926 what turned out to be its best example of neoclassical architecture. The Main Hall is known to the world as the arena of the Nobel Prize Ceremony every 10 December. The beautiful chamber music hall is named after Isaac Grünewald, who was responsible for the design. It has a magnificent Renaissance interior. The smallest of the three halls in the building is the Aulin Hall, named after the Swedish composer Tor Aulin.
