General Information


The development of tourism in Antalya presented opportunities to hold cultural and art festivals and other events. The main spectators of these festivals and activities are foreign visitors coming from all corners of the world. The most significant acitivity is the Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival, which begins in June and continues to mid July. Others are: International Aspendos Opera and Ballet Festival, International Antalya Piano Festival, International Golden Orange Film Festival, International Eurasia Film Festival, International Children's Day, the Runtalya Antalya Marathon, Elmali Traditional Wrestling Competitions, Kemer International Underwater Days, Phaselis Music and Art Days, Side International Culture & Art Festival, International Mediterrenean Cartoon Contest, the Golf Championship at Belek, Alanya Jazz Days, Triathlon Alanya, Tennis Tournament, Street & and Beach Handball.


The Antalya Museum is one of Turkey's best and in 1988 it was awarded the "Museum of the Year Award" of the European Council. Having a stroll round the museum helps to locate and understand the historic sites of the region. The main displays in the museum are from excavations at Side, Perge, Karatas, Semahöyük, Arykanda, Xanthos, Limyra, Patara and the Elmali Bayindir Tumulus. It is worth spending time for a visit either before or after you enjoy the sites. Antalya is an extremely green city, offering many sporting opportunities and with a coastline of 620 km it is suitable for all kind of water sports. Considering the natural setting of Antalya with the Taurus mountains you can also enjoy trekking, rafting, golf, football, yachting, hunting and all kind of outdoor sports.


There are a wealth of handicrafts available to the discerning shopper. Traditional items such as the world famous hand made kilim rugs in bold colours, beautifully hand‑painted ceramics, copper and brassware and ornate Meerschaum pipes make charming souvenirs and gifts. Carpet and rugs are very much part of the Turkish tradition. Excellent quality gold, silver and leather goods are to be had at prices considerably less than abroad. Busy street and area markets are packed full of stallholders jostling to sell you their best tasting fruit and freshest vegetables. The boutiques of Antalya can offer excellent quality fashion clothes and accessories for a fraction of the price in Europe. Have a walk along the beautiful Ataturk Street, Konyaalti Street or the pedestrian area of Sarampol or visit the ultra modern shopping malls in all areas of the city.
