Izmir values culture and art through its Art Galleries displaying samples of contemporary Turkish art and culture centers where the developing cultural activities of the world and of Turkey can be followed. The annual Culture and Art Festival of Izmir, is the most fascinating organization, where historic sites serve as stages for the activities. Concerts of the world’s most prestigious musicians along with ballet and theater performances are unforgettable experiences. The state opera, ballet and theater stages diverse performances year‑round. Shows and concerts are held on the antique grounds of the Ephesus ruins also.


Izmir is rich with its historical heritage and numerous museums displaying Hellenistic and Prehistoric exhibits. To name just a few: Izmir Ethnography Museum, Atatürk Museum, Izmir Fine Arts Museum, Izmir History and Art Museum, Inciralti Sea Museum, Ephesus Museum, Selcuk Yasar Paintings Museum and the E.U. Natural History Museum, a visual and scientific environment where natural history and assets of nature are collected, preserved and displayed.


Izmir hosted the 6th Mediterranean Games Organization aimed to reinforce the social and cultural bonds among the Mediterranean countries. This big sports event was followed by the 23rd Universiade Games with the participation of about 10,000 collegiate athletes from 161 countries and was among the most successful in the history of the games. Izmir was nominated by the Turkish government candidate for the realization of EXPO 2015 which is considered the world’s culture, history and education Olympics, where participating countries share their knowledge for the purpose of improving the living conditions on the world. Izmir owes its success in international organizations to its centuries old tradition of festivals. The traditional, wrestling, camel fighting, harvest feasts, kermises, art festivals and various celebrations are colorful aspects of the city’s social life. Alacati, windsurf center, is only less than an hour's drive from the city center.


Izmir’s peak shopping traffic is at the historic Kemeralti district, consisting of mosques, synagogues, offices, inns, markets, shops and bazaars. Established between 1650‑ 1670 it is the last stop of the antique Silk Road. Modern shopping centers are along Alsancak’s famous Kordonboyu, Kibris Sehitleri Street and Cumhuriyet Avenue ‑ carpet makers, elite boutiques, stores and furniture designers are located there. Karsiyaka Bazaar is one of the most known bazaars of Izmir.

Izmir offers a magical cuisine! Olive oil has been used in Izmir’s cuisine ever since the antique ages. Izmir and its surroundings are not only rich in sea food but also in a combination of Aegean, Mediterranean, and Anatolian dishes.
