Public Transportation
General Information

Mexico City is connected to the nation’s principal cities via 5 toll highways and is served by more than 35 bus lines. The subway system, known as the Metro, is one of the world’s largest, most efficient and most economical systems. Other options are trolleybuses, the Metrobus and light rail, known as the tren ligero, help reduce air pollution.

Taxis

There are several kinds of taxis in Mexico City, the most common models are painted green. Make sure the vehicle’s license plate starts with an L or an S before entering ‑ otherwise, don’t get in. Most recommendable is to call an authorized taxi stand (sitio autorizado) because the drivers know the city quite well and will get you to your destination quickly, following service standards. There also are tourist taxis (taxis turísticos) at the airport and major hotels. These are VIP private sedans.

RTP Buses and Metrobus

The buses that make up the so‑called passenger transport network (Red de Transporte de Pasajeros or RTP) covering numerous city routes, are comfortable and safe. The Metrobus offers a modern public transportation system as an alternative for the city’s transit problems.
