THE NATURAL MEETING AND CONFERENCE DESTINATION
Thriving and energetic, the islands of Trinidad and Tobago are approaching the meetings, incentives and conference (MICE) business in a serious manner. The twin-island Republic is situated just seven miles off the coast of Venezuela. The proximity of the Republic to the South American Mainland coupled with the fact that the destination is distinctively Caribbean, makes for a rich mélange of historical and cultural influences. The destination’s colonial past, having being under the control of Spain, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom in addition to a number of other European territories, has also heavily contributed to the diverse ethnic mix that exists on the islands.
Long Tradition of Political and Business Stability
Trinidad, the larger of the two islands, has had a very lengthy business tradition. The buoyant economy is fuelled by the petrochemical industry. Over the years, oil and gas discoveries have made the country very wealthy. Trinidad and Tobago is a stable democracy and achieved its independence from Britain in 1962. The nation achieved republican status in 1976.
New Convention Bureau Coming
The Tourism Development Company (TDC), the government agency responsible for the promotion and development of tourism, is in the process of establishing a Convention Bureau, the primary focus of which will be to serve the meeting and incentive planning community. Its main objective will be to bring groups to the destination. |
